Kinobe has often shared the stage with other celebrated artists—including Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Hugh Masekela—and has performed for the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Center, Old Town School of Folk Music, Carnegie Hall, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, amongst many others.
As a small boy, Kinobe's life was filled with the infectious drumming rhythms that echoed day and night from the Royal Palace, which was located just a few meters from his home in Uganda. It was his first attraction to traditional music. Twenty-five years, 10 albums, and many international performances later, the gifted, self-taught artist is launching his North American tour on the heels of the official release of his new solo record, The Voice Within. On this album, Kinobe creates soulful and soothing music that emanates from his custom-made Kora, Kalimba, Tama, and Endongo, along with rich layers of vocals performed in English and his native Ugandan tongue.
Rather than offering a mix of traditional songs with intimate rhythms, all of the tracks on The Voice Within are original, and tackle social and global issues dear to Kinobe's heart—love, diversity, economic development, and war—“but in a beautiful way,” he promises. He derived the album’s title from the lives of those who have a voice but are often not heard—such as children who’ve been traumatized by war or poverty, many of whom he’s mentored and trained in orphanages and refugee camps in Uganda for the past seven years. Kinobe credits their triumphant stories of survival as the inspiration for many of the lyrics on The Voice Within.
As a creative arts producer, speaker and facilitator, Kinobe has given talks and workshops all over the world, and has worked extensively with schools and colleges conducting residences and outreach exchange programs, leading in most cases to commemorative concerts with local students.
Through his Dance of Hope Foundation (www.danceofhope.com), Kinobe has dedicated his life to using his music and voice to bring love and joy to people, and help build a healthier, more peaceful world for children and families everywhere.
